The chart, in the 'keep reading' section is a visual display of how I see social mood relating to what is the ultimate process of the root trend. Yes, I use the name root trend in some ways like social mood but mostly as the process by which social mood exerts influence and is translated into indivdual action and especially patterns in consumer behavior. The chart was my first workable translation of why this is more than a series of esoteric observations and how it matters to marketers and decision makers.
Yes, a lot can be said for simply being abreast of current trends in consumer behavior but, when you add the larger dynamic of social mood and an appreciation for the degree of trend unfolding, there is the opportunity to find patterns and important subtlties where none existed before (except to the weathered & "tuned-in" professionals who can sense the changing tides in their industry). This work will help give it a name and a face. It also very clearly uses and at the same time parallels the observation used in The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. By using his stated three preconditions for a tipping point, amd together with an understanding of social mood, one can see aspects of consumer behavior from what is very likely, a better perspective.
